Tonight, after the kiddos were in bed, I trekked out to Target with my $5 off $50 coupon in tow. It was Easter Shopping Time! My plan was to spend just the $50 & get the $5 off. I should know myself better by now! Sigh.
Here’s what happened:
1. I don’t like to buy cheap wicker baskets that only would get used once, so I always elect to go to the Rubbermaid section & get some pretty plastic reusable containers to use as baskets. And there are so many pretty colors on those things! Plus……I’m saving the environment people!!! The wicker forests are being depleated! However, these baskets were $5.99 each, times 2.
2. I also don’t like to buy cheap fake grass that gets ALL over my carpet for months to come, so I found some pretty lime-green bath towels to line my container baskets. The kids needed some bigger towels anyway, since they’ve grown out of their kiddie towels & I’m tired of hearing “My butt’s cold!”. The price was $3.99 each, times 2.
3. Since I got the kids the bath towels, I might as well keep the theme going, so I got them each their own shampoo, body wash & “poof”. Price was $10 for that stuff.
4. We have WAAAAY too much candy in this house, but I had to get some candy & the plastic eggs, so I got some Peeps (I love ‘em when they get stale & hard!), Hershey’s Kisses (cuz Nick can have those cuz there’s no nuts), and the eggs. Price was $6 for all of that.
5. Since they didn’t have much candy & I didn’t want 1 more stuffed animal in this house, I thought I better get them something else, but not really toys. I ended up getting Nick some Pokemon cards & Jess some High School Musical cards & make-up. This was a bit pricey, for such small stuff. This won’t even fill up my basket! Argh!!! I spent $$21 on that junk – I mean stuff.
6. OK – the kids need some new clothes. So I bought Jess some teal shorts & a High School Musical shirt, and I got Nick a soccer shirt & some black soccer shorts. That put me out $35!!!
7. Finally, since I want them to be smart, I bought them each a book. I got a Junie B. Jones book for Jess & a Captain Underpants book for Nick. I might regret that one! As I’m looking over my receipt, I can’t find the charge for one of the books. Might lead me to a moral dilemna soon. Otherwise, I spent about $10 on those.
That’s $100 on Easter! YIKES!!!! I might be in a little bit of trouble when Dwight gets done playing World of Warcraft tonight, but at least I had a coupon!!!!
So far, I haven’t ever bought the kids new Easter clothes. Nick is NOT a “dress-up” kid, so there is no way I’m spending money on a nice outfit that I would have to buy dress shoes for him to wear once. Jess is just getting to the stage where she’d like a pretty dress & probably even an Easter Bonnet, but it’s going to be SO COLD this Easter! So, I guess I did save some money after all
Well girl I went to Target yesterday. Shoppng for three kids Easter baskets ( I bought them each nice big wicker ones with liners when they were each babies and use them over every year. We use the $1 plastic baskets for school and our many practice hunts.) I also got stuff for three kid’s Easter parties, AND our family egg hunt, AND computer ink AND a birthday present AND a baby present AND a great new rug that we really do need (4 less than half of all the others ones I like) and spent over $200.00…. AND FORGOT TO USE MY COUPON!!!!! Sigh.
Stephanie – Forgot your coupon? Sounds like a wonderful reason to go back because I’m sure there are a ton of other things you could get there! I am totally addicted! I also had to stop myself from picking up some clearance items, even though they were really cheap, because I didn’t really NEED them.
Don’t feel bad, I once went out to buy a bicycle and came home with a new car instead…and I didn’t have a coupon!
Target, WalMart, HOBBY LOBBY…all suck the money right out of my wallet…with or without a coupon
I really think Allen has us all beat – go out to buy a bike and come home with a car????
That will be my new justification when I overspend….”But, Honey, at least I didn’t buy a car!”
I am sad this year because both of my kids have asked if they can just have cash instead of a basket full of candy. Considering we just had a vacation, we are granting their wish and giving them a SMALL amount of money. I will be coming out ahead because it really does cost a lot to fill those baskets.
And oh how I miss buying the little Easter dress and frilly socks….(begin ugly cry now)
May God’s richest blessings be yours as you reflect on the extent of His love demonstrated through the death His Son on the cross and the awesomeness of His power exhibited through the resurrection.
To God be the glory!

Ouch! One thing I didn’t see mentioned was new duds for Easter morning. Those could easily have run close to $50. So maybe you can count the $50 you didn’t mean to spend as simply a replacement for the $50 you didn’t spend on Easter clothes? Maybe? Sort of? Or you could just pick your favorites and take the rest back!
